Bermet is being made exclusively from grapes from vineyards from the slopes of Fruska Gora! This dessert wine is enriched with 26 different kinds of aromatic herbs, one of them being the herb Wormwood that opens the appetite, so it is recommended to consume it with delicacies of far more famous Vojvodjanska cuisine. Bermet is made by placing red grapes red aromatic herbs in the barrels and so to the top, and then it all poured last year’s wine, then the barrel stands closed on a damp and cool place for three months. The exact recipe is not known because the technology of making Bermet is kept in Karlovac’s basements and families produced it as a top secret and as such is transmitted exclusively from generation to generation.
Due to this, this rare wine is produced in limited quantities, in only 15,000 to 20,000 bottles a year, and this very fact gives it a special value and impressiveness. It is interesting to note that Bermet was particularly appreciated at the court of Vienna, in Paris and throughout France, and several well-preserved bottles were found in the wreckage of the Titanic. The reason for this may be sought in local legends and bazaar stories that talk about the magical properties of Bermet. People say that men should be afraid when women drink. Apparently, women become insatiable libertines from this wine and initiate a game under the sheets until they completely exhaust a man. It is said that, because of its aphrodisiac properties, this was the favorite drink of Maria Theresa, and that she drank it daily in liters. Well, if you’re brave enough to check this claim, find yourself a friendly community, choose the red or white bermet … and get the party started!
