Did you know that you can wear woollen socks or a T-shirt for days without it getting crumple, dirty and smelly? The latest hit on the Internet is a journey with a woolen T-shirt that you can wear for days, then wash it and dry for a few minutes and then put it on.
Strolling around Belgrade, I came once on “Crafts Fair” at the beginning of Knez Mihailova Street. The producers expose homemade things here, and you could find everything – from jewelry, sandals, socks to purses, dolls and domestic soap. From time to time we walk there, I always buy something – a violet soap, homemade brandy or lavender oil. So, I once bought a woolen slippers from one big wool. It was cold, and I said – come on let`s try it!
I cannot express how delighted I am with these slippers! I use them in the winter by simply putting them on over the socks. They are incredibly warm, but what is surprising is that this wool does not stain and have uncomfortable with. Cotton socks must be changed every day, however, the wool is not felt for months and does not smell! Another odd feature is that they don`t get dirty. For example, white socks turn gray on the same day in Belgrade, I guess there is a lot of dust, but I wear this wool for months and it does not change color. They just can`t get smelly! They can be worn for days. I wore them for 6 days in order to test them and they were not dirty, nor they felt. I washed them on the seventh day, not because they were dirty, but because I was not stupid enough to wear them without washing …
Obviously that the wool as a natural material is second to none! Oh, and I used to laugh when Grandma used to say about woolen socks … God, I had no idea!
Wooel socks are the best to be worn without socks, sobecause that is the fastest way to warm your feet. The old peasants and young bikersn also claim this. This practice also apply hunters and anglers since only the woolen socks keep the feet warm in rubber boots in the snow. And skiers, athletes, and housewives. The leg does not sweat and socks retain heat. The only defect is that because of the woolen socks the shoes must be one size bigger since if it is tight for the foot it gets cold again.
We asked Grandma Vera, a hardworking woman selling woollen products made by her own hands at the Kragujevac market daily, to describe us the very procedure of production and sales. “My socks have three strands of wool. They are better than those with two. These are less expensive, but are less common, so they are more quickly torn. People are looking for them this winter and purchasing, I guess they are tired to run to the store every time to buy those industrial that can hole in a moment. You can darn my socks too.“ – said Grandma Vera standing on the winter in the center of Kragujevac and offering her goods.
BOOTS KEEP HEAD BUT BODICE KEEPS THE WHOLE FAMILY
In addition to socks, offered by Grandma Vera, there are also colorful, warm, woolen gloves and scarves, in cheerful and unique designs. Also, in addition to scarves, gloves and socks, Serbian knitters offer something invented by our ancestors, that is becoming fashionable again. WOLLEN BODICE
BODICE came to the focus of Serbian public after the show ,, Quite naturally, “in which the famous director Jovan Memedović tested this “ intimate clothing item“ in front of the cameras! The bodice has its history in all Balkan countries. And now, in the 21st century, you can buy it on our website!
The bodice is the garment for men, primarily those from the mountains of Bosnia, more or less known in the whole Dinaric area. It is not known exactly when they “entered into fashion,” but they are older than the tombstones in Bosnia. This garment was worn out as a completely ordinary and normal garment, and it had only one task – to protect the “manliness” from the winter. The process of taking measures for bodice was called DIRLIKANJE.
The girls used to knit it once, but just one piece of it, from the pure new wool and wore it as a dowry to other equipment, what our grandmothers and great-grandmothers surely remember. Some knitted along, some breadth, with the patterns of colorful woolen knitted fabric on five needles, which was not an easy job.
In the book of Diana Kostic, a researcher of Resava customs, the stories and songs said the young girls knitted “bodice” before the marriage and thus indicated to their mothers they wanted to get married. Mother would immediately spoke to the girl`s father to find a groom to whom the bodice would fit. This story is confirmed by the descendants of the ancient shepherds from the Resava region, claiming that the story is true.
Although it is now a taboo for young, to the old shepherds the bodice was a salvation from the cold wind that whipped the mountain, as well as to the young girls who were able to communicate that they wanted to get married.
But it is not only a bodice interesting to be reminded of.
PREDPICNJAK (serbian), though with no rich history as the bodice, but,then again, with a nice name. It’s just a name for the apron of the head cook at the weddings.
NAGUZNJACI or buttocks are the two pads made of canvas in which people could sneak the rags. The girls used to put thesed on their naked bodies, mostly in Slavonia, but also near Klis, in order to be more alluring, with rose hips and showed that they were ready to give birth.
