Palic lake is a real “watery” jewel of northern Serbia, Vojvodina region. Tucked away in the untouched flora and fauna, including some native species primarily protected – and rare specimens of trees and shrubs, such as swamp cypress and ash. Palic Lake is located 8 km from Subotica. The lake is of Aeolian origin, and it is the largest lake in Serbia occurred naturally! Officially it’s a part of the protected areas “Nature Park Palić”. The mystery of its landscapes has always captivated hearts of its visitors, throughout generations. Lake, luxurious parks, unusual buildings from the early 20th century, an unusual peace and quiet, make Palić lake an ideal place to rest and to enjoy a long weekend in the countryside. Luxury hotels and villas, extensive spa and wellness, and an excellent cuisine are the qualities by which Palić lake has been recognized and remembered. Promenades, beaches, bike trails, cultural, entertainment and sport facilities, as well as various events complement the offer of this tourist destination.
According to the legend, this beautiful lake is a remnant of the Pannonian Sea, but old people say that the lake was caused and created from the tears that shepherd Pavle, cried out, grazed by his flock.
In written documents, Lake Palic was first mentioned in 1462nd as Pali (Paly), a first drawing, which was a map of the lake (Paligo Palys) comes from the ancient 1690th.
Even in the late 18th century among the natives and locals, people knew that lake water and its mud have curative properties. According to the idea of doctors from Subotica (Szabatka), in 1845, the first inn named “Donja trščara,” was built. And, it was the basis of later construction of the whole beach and the spa region. Except for treatment (primarily for various bone and skin diseases), visitors came to Palic lake because of the sun and swimming, fun moments. Between 1880th and 1914th sport games in race walking, cycling, wrestling, fencing and other sports, were held in Palic.
After World War I, on the eastern shore of Palic they have built the Great (Men) Strand, the largest facility of its kind in the former Yugoslavia. And, after that they’ve built the Ladies Bath – another magnificent example of the Hungarian Art Nouveau. Once upon a time, when applicable different social standards, women were hiding here from the prying eyes of passers-by as they bathed in the lake, and this fabulous wooden building is rich in detail, reminiscent of folk art. The unusual architecture of this building, which is designed not to break, even after more than a hundred years, attracts visitors to stop by and see it. After WW II it was continued with the construction of Palic, in the 50’s they have built a Summer Stage of stone on which Palic has hosted many artists, and where, in recent years, the festival of European film, has been held every summer! Palić became the capital of the European culture and the “seventh art”.
In the sixties of the 20th century a huge sport-center with football, volleyball, basketball and handball was built here. On the east coast they have built a community resort for their workers. In 1978th, the first wells of thermal mineral water in Palic were dugged in, and in 1984th they’ve opened some thermal pools. A modern hotel “President” was built in 2000th, and in the same manner afterwards, several old Palić villas has been renovated. The large park has since been redesigned and more greenery have been planted, so that from the original area of more than 86,000 m2, the park, today, covers about 190,000 m2.

Protector of winemakers and growers in the city of Subotica – Horgoš sands, according to the tradition, is a saint called Holy Urban, and on his day, every 25th of May, a great ceremony is organized on the shores of Palic lake. Then, along with enjoying in other appropriate programs throughout the day, you can taste and buy excellent local wines and specialties of grapes and vines.
Besides wine ceremony, we recommend you visiting Palic in the time of Berbanski days. Those days are worshiped as the celebration of the harvest of grapes and other fruits that ripen in early fall. In addition to entertainment, cultural, artistic and culinary program, there is a small bazaar of handicrafts and a small market filled with different products – honey, fruit and wine. Purchasing or paying a deposit on the wineglass, you get the chance to try local wines from all the booths of numerous winemakers. This festive usually takes two days, and during that time in the “Etnopolis” ethnic mini-castle in the center of Subotica, an all-day fair of folk handicrafts and playgrounds for children is being organized. People are preparing local specialties in the evening hours, folklore groups from all over the world are showing off their local dances. The festival takes its place in the Wine Street, as well, where a dozen local winemakers, every year, throughout the day, offer tourists a taste of their rich and tastefull home-made wines.
EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL
The European Film Festival is one of the most important film festivals in the region and is one of the few in the world with 100 percent European “content”. Films who are in the main, competition, program, are running on a beautiful Summer Stage in Palić. This event brings together a large number of filmmakers and other guests from all over Europe. During the festival, a number of associated events, attractive to all visitors of the festival, are being organized. Every July around hundred films of European cinema, are being presented in nine different sections. During the seven days of the Film festival, Palic becomes a capital of European Culture and 7th art!

ACTIVE VACATION ON THE LAKE
Sport’s fans love the village recreation at Palic Lake, and the Pannonian plain is ideal for long walks and relaxing bike rides. Bicycles can be rented at three places in Palic. You can rent a pedal boat, while on the lake there is a small catamaran that can take you for a ride, if requested. Novelty in Palic, for those who are not afraid to get wet, is walking on water in giant balls filled with air, you can also enjoy rowing and surfing. There are three official beaches, an outdoor thermal pool and several outdoor pools in hotels that are also available to tourists.
FIRST OF MAY
May Reveille is a two-day tourist event. On that occasion, they officially open the summer tourist season. Then Palic becomes a big amusement park, filled up with restaurants and handicraft bazaars. Various cultural and entertainment programs attracts tens of thousands of visitors, every year! With an array of tents beneath, which revolve specialties on a spit, and hail hectoliters of beer and wine, there are small stalls with traditional sweets, sugar foam, jelly candy, “churros” -and lollipops. Here, guests can try the shooting from an air rifle, shooting balls, archery, darts, billiards, can take a ride on a small race track with a cheerful Serbian turbo-folk melodies blaring from the speakers, and can go up to one of “adrenaline” rides (which are way more funny than scary, I must say!). For this event, Palic has organized a performance of the famous serbian folksinger, Slobo Vasic, under the tent, with tasting of local drinks and dishes, a sailing race around the lake, competition in cooking the tastiest fish soup, as well as many other cultural, recreational and sports events.
LAKE LUDAS – A PLACE FOR THE TRUE NATURE LOVERS
Twelve kilometers east of Subotica is the village known as “Hajdukovo” and a mystical lake called “Ludaško”. The lake and its surrounding – wetlands, along with Selevenjske wildernesses, are extremely rich in various species of birds and at the same time – this is an area that is the natural habitat of many rare and endangered plants and animals. There are four educational facilities, which range from the big, modern Visitor Center, situated on the northern shore of the lake. Bird watching is organized from April to September, each year. In addition to the Visitor center there is a restaurant, tavern Sunjog, where visitors can enjoy some good seafood. The restaurant that is located on the shores of Lake Ludaš is covered by a thatched roof. “Čarda” is open from May to November. If you go east, you will come across a hundred-year-old farmhouse, which has an interesting ethnographic, natural and archaeological collection of objects found near the lake. A little “time pocket” that is so mystical and charming that it seems like the clock always stands here, is known as the “Rokin salaš”. Visits can be organized from mid-April to late October. Along the southern edge of the lake, not far from Palic, an equestrian center “Furioso”, is located, and here you can try out the most daring horse riding.
Founded in 1949th, it covers an area of 10 ha and it’s concept of beauty, order and this kind of good treatment of animals, are the things that make this zoo one of the leaders in this part of Europe. Here is where the visitors can enjoy the observation of over 60 species, that children are paticulary fond of. You can enjoy the magic of the great playgrounds as well as the magnificent baby zoo, which is a special attraction for the children. The conditions in which animals are held in are very human, a large expanse of nature, flora and fauna, and the meticulous arrangement are the main features of the Palic Zoo.
