This unusual gift of nature is located in southwest Serbia, 23 km southwest of Prijepolje to Kamena Gora mountain. This amazing three has survived and dominated a near-by village and the whole mountain where it has been standing for almost four centuries. The oldest tree in Serbia is characterized by an umbrella-shaped habit, imposing dendrometric values, vitality and good health. It is a 13 meters high, widespread tree, with well-developed broad crown diameter of 18.15 m, trunk height of 1.50 m and volume of 5.20 m that continues into six main pillars.
Although black pine trees typically grow in this secluded area, you can’t find a tree like this old pine. It symbolizes greatness, courage and endurance.
But those characteristics aren’t the only things that make this tree special. It stayed in it’s place and became a friend of those who were meeting, talking, arguing, reconciling, and loved each-other tenderly beneath it’s branches after a hard day.
Also, due the lack of the church nearby, it is consecrated as a sacred tree – a inscription, so underneath it, throughout centuries passed, people were performing worshiping rituals, in due of which this tree gained its name – Svetibor. Old people often swore saying “Bora mi”, to avoid taking God’s name in vain.
In the old medicine, local herbalists have made a cure for various wounds from pine resin. Witnesses say that this pine has healing effects and that they know people who were healed after spending a night under the Saint Bor.
According to one popular legend, our ancestors, inhabitants of Sveta Gora, came to this area 350 years ago, when there was no people around. Previous residents left this mountain about 50 years ago and their reason for leaving this place remains known only to the Saint Bor. They have made a hole in the trunk and left a message, which stated the reasons for their leavings. The hole is closed with a plug, and a secret of Saint Gora natives, remained forever hidden in the heart of this magical pine.
In Serbia,” the inscription” represents a tree that is sacred, and which has been engraved a cross and the sacred secrets which it guards. In the first place it has to be a large tree. It is believed that anyone who dare to cut down or in some way damage this tree will experience a great misfortune and misery in the future. You should not climb or sleep under Saint Bor. It is also highly forbidden to even pluck or break its branches. Even naturally fallen branches or cones cannot be collected or taken away.
There are various interesting stories about this place that attract tourists. One of them is that Emir Kusturica, a famous Serbian movie director and a producer, brought Monica Bellucci, a beautiful world-known actress, to the village near-by and she climbed up this magnificent tree. At that moment, according to one of the residents, many of the locals wanted to become Saint Bor just for one second. 🙂
