Zemun was built at the place where is now tower Gardos. In the Neolithic era, more than 7000 years ago, when it was built, it represented the first and oldest fortified settlement in Serbia.
On this plateau, Gardos was the ideal cornerstone to start creating the future of the city, because natural barriers as the high places that it was built on, and the proximity of the river were excellent for defense against enemies.
ZEMUN – ONE OF THE OLDEST SETTLEMENTS IN EUROPE
We don’t know how much Zemun is popular as a hot and flashy touristic destination, but we do know that everyone who decide to visit Belgrade should come to see Gardos, place where Zemun has begun it’s legendary history. We will give you at least five reason for it:
“MILLION DOLLAR VIEW” on Danube and old Belgrade
There are several places in Gardos, where you can come and capture this fascinating moment as an unforgettable memorabilia and a fairytale experience you will never forget.
First, the main viewpoint is the view from the first floor of the Gardos towel, the only floor opened for visitors. We will not write much, pictures will show you how magnificent this view is…
Second, “free” viewpoint is from rocks 2 meters high. With a little effort and a few seconds of your time, you can climb up to this spot. You should only pay attention not to trip on the wires which is protecting the stones from mudslide and sharp branches of wild grown trees breaking through these rocks.
The third viewpoint point is from caffe “Fat Cat” which is located a few meters from the tower Gardos. Here you can drink your coffee and capture some wonderful moments.
The fourth viewpoint is from caffe bar “Pogled”, which is on right side of Sindjeliceva, cobblestone street, when you pass the old city stairs. Experts say that the sighting of the sea, lake or river is simple and natural cure against everyday stress, anxiety and depression. We should, as much as the time and possibilities permit us, spend our free time near the water, because as some scientists say – daily observation of aquatic expanses improves your mood and extends lifetime. Therefore, you should run out the city to this special place that was created for enjoyment, and take a break near the river, with some refreshing drink in your hand and a peaceful “million dollar” view.
And now perfect atmosphere! The fifth viewpoint is something that doesn’t come often. In the street Despota Djurdjana 22, on Gardos, the old railway wagon has found its place to tuck itself… The old railway wagon served in 1994 as the basis for the construction of the entire building, which we have now! Over 200 square meters of space. In the restaurant “Balkan Express” you can chill in a beautiful garden at 50 meters above the water surface. Bigger part of the restaurants is turned to look at the Danube. In this part of Zemun there is no traffic, or any kind of noise. Isolated from the urban ruction, you can enjoy in unusual cuisine while you overlooking the Danube. Take a note that this place is usually crowded on Fridays and Saturdays, so if you’re thinking of visiting make sure that you’ve made your reservations a few days earlier.
Surely, one of the most beautiful historical attractions on Gardos is this magnificent tower . It represented a former symbol of Hungarian power and domination in Europe, and now represents a visual and historical symbol of Zemun. The Millennium tower is famous also as Zemunska Tower, Gardoska and the Tower of Sibinjanin Janko. The tower was built of stones and bricks and the height reaches 36 meters. The Hungarian state has made the Millennium tower, along with six other buildings.
By checked sources from Budapest, there are seven Millennium Monument. They refer to the period from 896 to 1896 and the Hungarian millennial presence in this region. These monuments are completely different architecture and located in seven locations in Europe.
